Ashurst Beacon Skelmersdale
Skelmersdale is a small town situated in the countryside of West Lancashire and is run by
West Lancashire Borough Council in Ormskirk. Skelmersdale is also known to the locals as Skem as well as Old Skem for the obvious older region of the town. The town was designated a New Town back in 1961 and has a good road communications system with links to all the
major towns and cities in the Northwest via the M58 and M6.
The town centre of Skelmersdale consists of one main shopping centre,
The Concourse or known by us locals as 'the conny'. Also close by and providing more choice in shopping is an Asda Supermarket,
which opens for 24hrs during a normal week.
To get a great view of Skelmersdale and surrounding area then the Ashurst Beacon is the place to be as it's the highest point in West Lancashire and it includes Beacon Country Park
with spectacular views of the Lancashire plains to the west and the Pennine Hills to the east.
Skelmersdale is also famous for the amount of roundabouts it has, and the lack of traffic lights on the roads around the town. Skelmersdale has one of the biggest roundabouts in Europe called Half Mile Island.
To learn more about the local history of Skelmersdale's past there is an excellent website that has lots of information and photographs and it is run by
Skelmersdale Heritage Society which was founded in 2003.
